"Revival" is the inspiring retelling of the life story and testimony of Aimee Semple McPherson, a passionate Canadian missionary and powerful Christian evangelist of the 1920's and 30's who led a spiritual revival in the United States that impacted hundreds of thousands of people. Named the 1926 "Woman of the Year" by Time Magazine in 2020, McPherson creatively and fearlessly founded the International Foursquare Church in Los Angeles, California in 1923 with the building of the 5,000-seat Angelus Temple and the leading of a radio station, all while navigating rising national and international fame.

The show is comprised of compelling live audio recordings of McPherson's teachings and experiences as, in her own voice, she recounts her life story with charisma and humor. Mixed with historic photographs, video recordings, and seven new dances from Freedom Dance Company that zoom in on her life, ministry, and journey with God, Aimee Semple McPherson's testimony comes alive in a beautiful way that is guaranteed to inspire and encourage audience members into their own revival.

Show Background

The concept for "Revival" was first conceived by Christine Kulonis of Revival Story, an outreach that exists to bring God-stories to life through the arts. A native Oregonian and fourth-generation Foursquare Church member out of Corvallis, Oregon, Kulonis has informally coordinated "Back Porch Reunions" for graduates of L.I.F.E. Bible College (now Life Pacific University), the university affiliated with the preparation of Foursquare ministers that Aimee Semple McPherson founded in1926. Also a L.I.F.E. Bible College graduate, Kulonis recounts that upon seeing "Aimee photographs and memorabilia" at their 2019 reunion, the alumni----now retired ministers of the Foursquare Church----were greatly moved, feeling like they had been to one of Aimee's meetings. "This felt like a revival!" one alumnus exclaimed. It was then that Kulonis was inspired to create an artistic live retelling of McPherson's whole story, called "Revival," and the idea gradually developed to mature into a worship experience concept that would incorporate live audio recordings of Aimee (namely her sermon "Milk Pail to Pulpit"), historic photos and film, Christian music, and live dance.

By providence and just in the knick of time, Kulonis was connected with Rebecca Chadd of Freedom Dance Company in August, 2021 to bring to life the various dance portions that she had been envisioning for "Revival."  After their initial phone conversation, both women were excited and could feel something bigger emerging in their collaborative conversation. Six quick weeks later, on September 23, 2021, the first humble showing of "Revival" took place at sundown on the Kulonis' Farm in Shedd, Oregon. Under the direction of Rebecca Chadd and Sharon Lane, the show quietly, but quite significantly, emerged onto the earthly scene with four new choreographic works by Freedom Dance Company. And the rest is history!

While the show technically debuted privately that calm harvest eve, the full-stage developed production of the show had its world premiere publicly at the Kroc Center Theater in Salem, Oregon on February 4, 5, 11, and 12 (see times and ticket info above). It was complete with three additional dances and an enhanced documentary-like film creating a dynamic, full-length experience for the audience. Thank you to all who came to see this amazing story come to life!
